Last Friday, a protection shield was built under the car, to protect the engine from sand, dried up camel dung, rocks, and whatever else we may come across on our way south. We are very grateful to Acico Yachts BV, Enhuizen, who provided materials and room to get this done!
Our GPSradio has been installed in the car last Saturday, and an enormous and awesome bullbar is waiting in the trunk to be put on the car tonight.. And then… we’re even more ready to go..

.. and then we’re FINALLY off to The Gambia..
Last Saturday’s sponsor party was really nice, and we raised a fair amount for our trip. A warm ‘thank you’ to all who came, also for your enthusiasm and interest in our rally.
We are só excited to go!
In the meantime, there’s been some important developments concerning our car. See below for a detailed report!
—
On Monday, August 30, one of the Paladines had a little accident on the highway, result; a damaged car hood, and a ‘useless’ Willy.. However, since the engine was still running smoothly (!), a second, identical Peugeot was purchased the same week, for only €100. The body work of this car is still perfect, so this week, Willy’s engine will be transplanted into our new Peugeot..
from now on called Willy2!
We are extremely grateful to garage Autobedrijf Sille Nieuwegein BV, (http://www.sillenieuwegein.nl)! They offered us use of their garage, tools and professional knowledge to complete the engine transplantation; our rally car will be finished this week, with the old heart, a new -green- outside, and the best parts of the 2 Peugeots combined into 1 super car! Wow, we’re very happy with this!
It took only 2 hours on 1 evening to get the engine out of our original car. The body work stands on the hydraulic lift now, and last Friday night Willy’s engine has been put into this new Peugeot. It all went very smoothly, and at the end of the evening, the engine successfully started!
One little disappointment; a part of the pump appeared to be leaking, which will need to be replaced this week.
Once this is done, we’ll be all ready to go!!!

New CV Joint!

Because the left front CV Joint had been making some weird noises, it was replaced last Saturday. We’re very grateful to Kila Autodemontagebedrijf in Heerhugowaard, who provided us with a new Joint for free!
Without too many problems and in only a few hours, we took Willy apart and put in the new part (thanks to Sturgis Motoren, Andijk for lending us their socket spanner), after which we went for a successful test drive.
See the pictures below for an impression:
New clutch
// August 16th, 2010 // No Comments » // Uncategorized
Our car suffered from a worn clutch, which is not all strange for a second-hand with more than 427,000 driven kilometres. Because the car kept making strange noises, we figured it was time for a new one!
The Paladines found a sponsor in mr. Post of Airco Service Online in Heemskerk, who was willing to fix the clutch for its cost price. He has done this in the meantime; how Willy’s gear box is running smooth!
During the repair, it turned out that one of the bearings needed replacement as well, as you can see on the pictures. This, and some other small stuff has been replaced right away.
Thank you so much, Airco Service Online (www.aircoserviceonline.nl)!

21 days, a hot desert, sand everywhere and a mission: to bring a car to the auction in Banjul, Gambia. On October 2, 2010, Pauline Krikke and Jan van Rookhuijzen start their journey in Antwerpen, with roughly 7000km of highways, country roads, bumps, holes, and sand, lots of sand ahead. The road leads through Belgium, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and The Gambia. In The Gambia, the car will be sold, and the money donated to a local charity organization. We drive for an organization that supports women in setting up a small business. You’ll find more information under ‘Our Project’.
Of course, we make this trip because we like the adventure, however, that is not all. We believe in an Africa with a self-sustaining economy, independent of foreign help. That is why we decided to drive for this organization. You can help us by becoming a sponsor. You can do this by donating money or materials. Companies can, in addition, reserve advertisement space on our car. Besides, your company name will be listed on this website.
